Larimer Campus
Sunlight Peak
Elevating science teaching to the next level
Sunlight Peak, a brand new science building, meets the Larimer Campus’s urgent need for more science labs and classrooms, science prep areas, and faculty offices.
Helping to meet growing enrollment
Sunlight Peak doubled the number of labs and classrooms at the Larimer Campus. As enrollment has grown, the campus has hired additional faculty to accommodate the increased number of students. Sunlight Peak also will house offices for faculty for office hours and advising sessions.
Phase two
Now that Sunlight Peak is open, Challenger Point is being remodeled. Existing labs on the second floor will be turned into general classrooms and faculty offices. Classrooms on the first floor of Challenger Point will remain open during renovation.
Funding
This $14.7 million project is funded with state Certificate of Participation bonds. This construction project and 11 projects on other college campuses were authorized by Senate Bills 08-218 and 233 and House Joint Resolution 08-1042.
Going for green
FRCC is seeking LEED certification for Sunlight Peak, so conservation methods were incorporated into the lighting, plumbing, and HVAC systems. The building was constructed with sustainable materials, and construction waste was recycled. Trees at the construction site were transplanted to other areas of the campus. The new landscaping around Sunlight Peak features native plants with low-water needs. Continuing a longstanding practice of the Natural, Applied, and Environmental Sciences Department, Sunlight Peak has “micro-scale” labs to reduce chemical use.
