Assistive Technology
Our Assistive Technology Labs are computerized learning centers with specialized software and hardware. The specific hardware and software available varies by campus and all equipment may not be available at each campus. Below is just some of the assistance we can provide. Please contact your campus Disability Services Office to learn more.
Hands-Free PC
Dragon Naturally Speaking is a speech recognition dictation program that allows students to speak their written work rather than type it. Students can use simple voice commands to write and revise text, navigate within a document, and control the computer.
Speech Screen Reader
JAWS is a speech-output screen reader. It is designed for computer users who are blind or have low vision. It reads all text on the screen or in a window.
Screen Magnifier
ZoomText is a screen magnifier designed for computer users who have vision impairments. It magnifies screen content up to 16 times without pixilation, so that users do not lose screen clarity when they magnify.
Read Aloud
WYNN is literacy software that helps readers and writers. Students can scan a document and hear it read aloud. You can also alter the way documents look on the screen to make reading it easier, such as masking the part of the document that is not being read so that users see only the part of the sentence that is being read aloud. This can greatly improve concentration.
WYNN can also be used as a writing program. Students can create a document within WYNN. Since many students attest that they hear mistakes even when they do not see them in their own writing, students can use WYNN’s read-aloud function to hear what they have written when editing their work.
Convert Printed Documents
Open Book Unbound converts printed documents into electronic text format.
