Jo is the Program Director for the Holistic Health Program as well as one of the program’s instructors. She has her Masters Degree in Education and Counseling from Colorado State University and has been a long-time, actively involved resident of the Northern Colorado community. Having a mother who was also a career educator, Jo is passionate about education and being a life-long learner. Jo has been a Career & School Counselor as well as a Licensed Professional Therapist working predominantly with teens & families until coming to Front Range Community College in 2010, when she began teaching Psychology and serving as a part-time Academic Advisor at both the Boulder and Larimer Campuses. She is also a firm believer in Integrated/Complimentary Medicine, where the focal essence is treating the whole person and not just their symptoms, as well as the impact of the mind-body-soul connection on one’s overall health and wellness. Jo has been the Business Manager/Partner of a local holistic store since 1999 as well as a Holistic Practitioner in various modalities. Jo also enjoys outdoor activities, road trips, listening/dancing to music of many genres, movies, reading, collecting crystals/stones and spending quality time with her eclectic family, her pets and children of all ages.
Teaching Philosophy
First and foremost, I strive to create an open, safe, fun, friendly and inclusive learning environment for all of my students. As for my educational philosophy, I once read a quote by an anonymous author that said, “The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.” This quote embraces my philosophy on education because to me, being a part of a learning community is not only about educating our students on what we know or what think they should know, but it is more about encouraging, engaging and empowering them to see and understand how the content they are learning fits into the bigger picture of the world around them. Thus, a significant part of my teaching is to engage students in the process, to demonstrate the relevancy of all they are learning to their own lives, and perhaps most importantly, to help them to gain an understanding of their unique connection and personal contribution to the “big picture” called Life, by assisting them in experiencing and seeing far beyond what may written in a book, noted by a famous person or even taught in the classroom.
