Teaching Philosophy
I believe that every day, we evolve and shift in our identities. When I teach, I focus on who the students are in front of me and how our class material contributes to their understanding of themselves and our world. I’ve learned that one of the most powerful things I can do as a college instructor is resist telling my students who they are and challenge them to use our class as one more way of exploring themselves as they grow in their critical thinking skills. Whether I’m teaching audience-awareness in composition or symbolism in literature, I’m asking students to think more carefully, and it is this careful thinking that shapes who we are, what kind of world we’re participating in, and how to progress within both.
