Our Philosophy

The Developmental Studies Department believes that students in our developmental classes should be given authentic learning experiences that prepare them to be successful in future college courses, granting them access to higher education and providing them with life-enhancing opportunities.

We offer a variety of courses, including Developmental English, Reading, Academic Achievement, and GED preparation courses. We staff the Writing and Academic Skills Center, which provides support to students in developmental courses as well as all students seeking to improve their writing skills.

Our department works closely with the Communications and Mass Media Department and also works with multi-disciplinary faculty members who seek to incorporate more writing assignments into their courses. Our department also has close relationships with ESL and the Institute for Community and Professional Development, and has partnered with the Social and Behavioral Sciences and Humanities and Fine Arts Departments to offer Learning Communities.

We believe very strongly in our students’ potential to be successful, and we provide them with academically rigorous courses that prepare them for higher education and inspire them to seek out new opportunities. It is our good fortune to be able to provide students with the tools to succeed at FRCC and witness their transformation.
