The HCC Contractor Academy teamed up with Front Range Community College to develop specific courses to help you develop your contracting business. You will learn from experts in the areas of accounting, operations, project cost and management, contracts, human resources and business development. Each course can be taken as a stand-alone class—or you can mix-and-match the topics you need.

In-Person Classes

Intro to Blueprint Reading for Contractors

This class is for contractors with little to no knowledge and/or experience with blueprint reading. The goal of this class is to equip contractors with the fundamental skills required to read and interpret construction blueprints. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of blueprint symbols, construction drawings, and specifications essential for successful project execution. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical exercises, this course aims to build a solid foundation for contractors entering the world of blueprint reading. Note: This is one of a series of courses presented through a Colorado Skill Advance Grant submitted by the NoCo Construction Partnership, City of Fort Collins and City of Loveland.

Intermediate Blueprint Reading for Contractors

This intermediate-level class is tailored for contractors who possess foundational knowledge and experience in blueprint reading. The primary objective is to deepen participants' understanding of blueprints and specifications, focusing on advanced concepts without delving into specialized areas like MEP plans. The course aims to enhance participants' interpretative skills and prepare them for more complex construction projects. Additional resources will be provided for those seeking to advance their knowledge beyond the intermediate level. Note: This is one of a series of courses presented through a Colorado Skill Advance Grant submitted by the NoCo Construction Partnership, City of Fort Collins and City of Loveland.

Introducción a la lectura de planos para contratistas 

Esta clase está diseñada para contratistas con poco o ningún conocimiento y/o experiencia en lectura de planos. El objetivo de esta clase es equipar a los contratistas con las habilidades fundamentales necesarias para leer e interpretar planos de construcción. Lectura de planos intermedia para contratistas

Esta clase de nivel intermedio está diseñada para contratistas que poseen conocimientos y experiencia básicos en la lectura de planos. Effective time Management for Contractors

This course is designed for employees beginning their management careers and those considering a transition into managerial responsibilities. This engaging and supportive learning experience is guided by the knowledge and experiences of you and your fellow participants. By the end of this 8-hour training, you will be able to:

  • Consider various factors related to contract terms and conditions that impact managing a construction project
  • Explain how planning and scheduling impacts building the estimate of cost for the project
  • Relate the importance of plans and specifications to managing a construction project
  • Define and describe submittals
  • Report on the relationship of quality assurance and quality control to the successful completion of construction projects
  • Describe the role of documentation in managing construction projects
  • Explain how schedule tracking fits into the responsibilities of a project manager
  • Describe how data is collected to evaluate financial aspects of a construction project
  • Outline the elements of closing out a project.

This course is designed for employees beginning their management careers and those considering a transition into managerial responsibilities. This engaging and supportive learning experience is guided by the knowledge and experiences of you and your fellow participants. By the end of this 8-hour training, you will be able to:

  • Explain the function of job descriptions
  • Determine tactics for identifying and building future talent by focusing on training, mentoring, leadership skills, and relationship building
  • Examine the use of performance review processes to develop employee accountability
  • Describe strategies used to resolve conflict in the workplace
  • Reflect on your personal accountability in effectively hiring and retaining employees.

This course is designed for employees beginning their management careers and those considering a transition into managerial responsibilities.   • Illustrate the employment arc from finding an employee through hiring and employment
  • Summarize the role of an employee handbook in construction businesses
  • Outline the ways in which prevailing wage relates to businesses in the construction industry
  • Explain how various laws and requirements relate to employment in the construction industry.
