Medical Assistant & Medical Office Administrative Assistant

Whether you want to assist with exams, administer medication or perform administrative functions, our medical assistant classes and training will give you the hands-on experience and knowledge needed to succeed. 


Medical Assistant Certificate

26 credits
(2 semesters)

Offered at: Boulder County, Larimer, and Westminster

This certificate is designed to prepare individuals to work in ambulatory health care facilities in both the administrative and clinical areas. Administrative skills are developed in the areas of medical office procedures, written communications, financial management, insurance billing, International Classification of Diseases - 10th (ICD-10) Edition, and Physicians Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding. Clinical skills include assisting with patient intake, physical examinations, diagnostic tests, and treatment procedures, including administration of medications and first aid.

What You Will Learn

Upon completion of the Medical Assistant Certificate, you will be able to:

  1. Understand the anatomy & physiology, pathophysiology and identify medications, their application and adverse reactions applied to major body systems.
  2. Understand the legal aspects of medical records and establish a personal and professional code of ethics.
  3. Understand the Electronic Health Record.
  4. Understand and translate medical terminology including abbreviations and use in medical records.
  5. Understand basic billing and coding concepts utilized in a medical office.
  6. Understanding of medical records, front desk activities and office management.
  7. Demonstrate basic routine laboratory skills for collection, handling and examination of laboratory specimens.
  8. Perform activities associated with aiding a physician with clinical duties.
  9. Collaborate with supervised Medical Assistant Internship in a contracted facility.
  10. Prepare for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant national exam.

Medical Office Administrative Assistant

5 credits
(1 semester)

Offered at: Boulder County, Larimer, and Westminster

This program trains students to be healthcare administrative assistants knowledgeable in medical terminology and Electronic Health Records (EHR), managing the daily operations of a medical facility, checking patients in, verifying patient insurance, and providing quality customer service.

Apprenticeship Opportunities

Each FRCC campus offers apprenticeships that students in our program can apply for. Apprentices get paid for on-the-job training with our local healthcare partners, which include CenturaHealth, Boulder Medical Center, Boulder Community Health, Arbor Family Medicine and Associates in Family Medicine.
