General Requirements
Information Sessions
All students must complete the program information session. These sessions provides a detailed overview of the Health Information Technology AAS and the Medical Coding Certificate at Front Range Community College.

AHIMA Membership
HIT students are required to maintain a student membership with AHIMA throughout the program. Membership is an additional cost and can be completed on the AHIMA website. Details on membership requirements are also covered in the information session.

Mandatory Program Orientation
Attending the mandatory program orientation is an essential first step toward a successful journey in the HIT program. Offered each semester (fall and spring), this virtual orientation equips you with key information and tips to help you navigate the program with confidence. The orientation takes place one week before classes begin. Once you’re registered for HIT courses, you’ll receive an email with the date, time, and a link to join the session; so you won’t miss a thing!
External Internship
At the end of the program, students complete a
- HIT AAS Degree 40-hour external internship
- Medical Coding Certificate: 20-hour external internship
This hands-on experience bridges classroom learning with real-world practice, helping you build professional skills, networks, and career insight in a healthcare setting.
Internship Requirements
- Immunizations: TB test (annual), Tdap (within 10 years), Hepatitis B series or proof of immunity, MMR (2 doses or proof of immunity), Varicella (2 doses, titer, or MD-documented disease), seasonal flu vaccine (Oct–Mar). All must remain current throughout the program.
- Certifications: American Heart Association BLS Provider CPR (HPR 1011 offered at FRCC).
- Other: Background check and drug test.
Completing these requirements ensures you are prepared for safe and successful hands-on experience in the field.
