Please Note: Admission into the Veterinary Technician program is a separate step from admission to the college. Admission will be based on meeting the admissions criteria, providing the required documentation, overall GPA and program capacity. Admitted student must fulfill program rabies vaccine requirement prior to enrollment.
To apply for the Veterinary Technican program, please follow the steps below:
Step 1. Apply to FRCC
Step 2. View Required Information Session
The Veterinary Technician information session is available online (via YouTube). This recording also includes information about the Vet Assistant program. Please contact us if you have any questions after watching the information session.

Step 3. Review Required Prophylactic Rabies Policy
Step 4. Math & English Placement
Placement is no longer required. However, you may want to review the math or english placement guides to see what route is the best fit.
Step 5. Meet HSW Academic Advisor
Meet with your Health Sciences & Wellness (HSW) Academic Advisor to further discuss the Veterinary Technician program.
Academic Advisors are located in the Advising and Career Center, Mount Antero building, Room 450. You can make an appointment in person or over the phone at 970-204-8332.
Step 6. Submit Transcripts (if applicable)

If you took prerequisite coursework outside of FRCC, transcripts must be officially evaluated through the FRCC Registrar's Office.

Prerequisites must be transferred to your FRCC transcript before applying.

Evaluations take up to 30 days to complete after the official transcript and the Transfer Credit Evaluation Form are received (eWOLF > Student Resources > Student Forms > Transfer Credit Evaluation Form).
Step 7. Complete Required Prerequisite Courses

BIO 1111 General College Biology I with lab (5 credits) Must be within 10 years.

ENG 1031 Technical Writing or ENG 1021 College Composition (3 credits)

MAT 1140 Career Mathematics OR HIGHER (3 credits)

Approved Elective (3 credits). Approved electives include: Advancement of Academic Achievement (AAA 1009) , Introduction to Business (BUS 1015), Introduction to PC Applications (CIS 1018), Introduction to Programming (CSC 1019), any World Language (1001 or higher), Applied Companion Animal Behavior (VET 1009) or any 3 credit Guaranteed Transfer (GT) pathways course.
These courses need to appear on your transcript as transferred in, completed prior to submitting your veterinary technician application. Please wait to send your veterinary technician application until your transcript is complete. Your combined grade point average (GPA) must be at least a 3.0.
Step 8. Complete Required Animal Care Experience
All students must complete at least 15 hours working or volunteering (paid or unpaid) with animal care professional(s). This can include a veterinary clinic, shelter, rescue, boarding facility, ranch and/or stable. This experience can be completed with one or multiple individuals at one or different locations. You will be asked to provide the name and contract information for the professional, as well as the duration and nature of the experience in your application.
Step 9. Apply to the Veterinary Technology Program
We are in the process of updating our application this will be available in spring 2026.
Step 10. Complete General Education Credits

Students must complete BIO 2104 Microbiology with Lab (4 credits) as part of the Veterinary Technician program. BIO 2104 may be taken at any point during the program including summer semesters.

While CHE 1011 (Introduction to Chemistry I with Lab) is no longer required for a Veterinary Technician AAS degree, this course or CHE 1111 (Chemistry in Context with Lab) are highly recommended for students with little or no current knowledge of chemistry.

It's also recommended that students have computer competence.
