As our health care system continues to evolve, there is a growing need for medical support staff. At FRCC, you can train to be a medical assistant or medical office administrative assistant.

Medical assistants help doctors, nurses and other health care providers with tasks such as patient intake, first aid, phlebotomy and lab tests. As more medical facilities rely on medical assistants, there is a great demand for them. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment for this position to grow 16 percent from 2021 to 2031.

At FRCC, you'll be ready to be a medical assistant in a short amount of time. Our one-year certificate program teaches you the important office and clinical skills you need. Because you gain patient care experience, you'll be able to find future job opportunities in the medical field with more training.

We also offer a one-semester medical office administrative assistant certificate program. You'll learn medical terminology and how to manage the daily operations of a medical clinic. You'll practice using Electronic Health Records (EHR). With this program, you'll be a valuable member of a facility's front desk and operations.

Medical Assistant

Program Locations: Boulder County, Larimer and Westminster

Total Credits: 26 credits (2 semesters)

Become a medical assistant who assists with both administrative work and clinical care. In your courses, you'll learn skills including:

  • Medical office procedures
  • Written communications
  • Financial management
  • Insurance billing
  • International Classification of Diseases (ICD)
  • Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding

In your clinical classes, you will practice skills including:

  • Patient intake
  • Physical examinations
  • Diagnostic tests
  • Treatment procedures, including administration of medications and first aid

You'll also learn outside of the classroom with hands-on clinical experiences. You can find an internship or apply for our apprenticeship program.

  • Boulder County: Program only starts in the fall semester.
  • Larimer: Program only starts in the fall semester.
  • Westminster: Program starts in the fall and summer semesters.

Find a career assisting medical facilities with administrative tasks. Regular duties include patient check-in, insurance verification and customer service. In your classes, you'll study medical terminology and Electronic Health Records (EHR) usage.
