English and Communication

Matt has taught nearly every English class offered at FRCC. Since 2005, he has focused on teaching composition and literature classes, often linking his class with another faculty member’s class in a learning community. In 2008, Matt attended the Kellogg Institute for the Training and Certification of Developmental Educators at Appalachian State University in North Carolina. The institute is the nation's oldest continuous advanced-training program for developmental educators and learning-skills specialists. Matt and his wife enjoy chasing after their two active sons. Teaching Philosophy
There’s something about being in a classroom. I have the opportunity to see students grow. You see such dramatic changes, from some students not being able to log on to a computer to being able writing a term paper in Psychology. It’s fun to be in front of people, listening to the discussions and the tangents we go off on. Teaching with another instructor in a learning community has totally rejuvenated my approach. I have never learned so much about a subject as when I teach it with another instructor. We are introducing academic rigor to a population of students that is not used to it. And you know what? They rise to it.
