Medical Careers Exploration

The Medical Careers Exploration program prepares students to pursue careers in health care, including: physical therapist, EMT, paramedic, physician, nurse, nurse aide, laboratory technician, ultrasound technician, medical office manager, medical records specialist, medical secretary, billing specialist, occupational therapist, audiologist, optometrist, hospital administrator, and more!

  • Learn about careers in the health care field.
  • Explore human anatomy and physiology, in health and disease.
  • Study medical terminology.
  • Study concepts of disease transmission.
  • Learn safe practice in the clinical setting; hand washing, gloving, protective gear, and biohazard disposal.
  • Review topics like nutrition, human development, mental health, and more.
  • Earn a certificate in dementia care.
  • Examine ethical and legal considerations in health care.
  • Practice fundamental nurse aide skills; moving/transporting patients, helping patients to perform daily tasks, taking vital signs, medical math, patient communication, and more.
  • Complete emergency training in Health Care Provider CPR & First Aid.
  • Earn placement at a clinical site with real patients and gain real world experience.
  • Prepare to sit for the state board exams to become a Certified Nurse Aide.
  • Acquire professional workplace and employment skills throughout the year.

  • Able to pass a background check
  • Participation in all assignments & activities

High School Credit

Coursework may qualify for high school academic credit and/or fulfill high school graduation requirements. See your high school counselor for more information.

College Credit (2019-2020 School Year)

Seven optional FRCC college credits are available:

  • HPR 208 Medical Record Terminology
  • NUA 101 Certified Nurse Aide Health Care Skills
  • NUA 170 Nurse Aide Clinical

Students who successfully complete NUA 101 and NUA 170 and complete certificate program admission requirements earn a FRCC Nurse Aide Certificate and sit for the Colorado State Nurse Aide certification exam!

Required test scores for students pursuing optional NUA 101 and NUA 170 credit:

  • Accuplacer: Place into CCR 094 or higher — or —
  • SAT (new) Evidence-Based Reading and Writing: 470 or higher

Optional college credits earned through this program apply towards FRCC degrees and certificates!

Eligible Students

Juniors and seniors (seniors strongly recommended)


Tuition paid by school district. Students pay program fees. Required immunizations, TB tests, background check, and state CNA certification exam may incur additional costs (up to $141).
