Financial Aid Basics

Learn more about these important concepts and how they affect financial aid.

Cost of Attendance

Every institution that awards federal financial aid is required to set a standard Cost of Attendance (COA). This is an estimate of your expected school related costs for an academic year. Your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is calculated from the FAFSA and reported on the Student Aid Report, which is what you receive from the government after you submit your FAFSA. Awarding Process

If you file an application between February and April, financial aid is typically applied to a student's account between September and December for fall semester, and between January and April for spring semester. See the full timeline >

Effect of Outside Assistance

There are limits to the amount of financial aid that students can receive. All funds that the Financial Aid Office awards come from either federal or state tax dollars so we work hard to make sure that aid is being awarded to students who need it the most.

If the Financial Aid Office is notified (after an award has been made) that a student has received an outside scholarship that puts the student in an “over-award” status, we will be required adjust the award. Students cannot receive more aid than the Cost of Attendance (COA) for Front Range Community College.
