Current Healthcare Apprenticeship Programs
Medical Assisting Apprenticeships
Train to be a medical assistant in just one or two semesters through this hands-on program. Apprentices save money on tuition—and get paid for on-the-job learning through one of FRCC's partner organizations:
- Arbor Family Medicine (Denver area)
- Associates in Family Medicine (Fort Collins)
- Banner Medical Group
- Boulder Community Health
- Centura Health
- Kaiser
- St. Joseph's Hospital
- UCHealth
When an apprentice successfully completes this program, they are well-prepared to take a national exam to become a certified medical assistant.
They also have:
- A nationally recognized credential for medical assisting from the US Department of Labor
- A national certification for medical assisting
- A diploma from FRCC
- And in most cases, continued employment
About This Program
This program is designed for students who want to work as medical assistants. Some FRCC students are selected for apprenticeships while they are studying to complete a two-semester certificate in medical assisting at the college.
They complete the program ready to enter the workforce. Other apprentices are hired by our health care partner organizations first—and then given medical assisting education and training while on the job.
Once in the apprenticeship program, it takes 20 weeks to complete the required coursework at FRCC in addition to working at a health care employer. Apprentices complete a total of 2,000 hours on-the job training. View Program Overview.
What Is Taught in This Program?
Apprentices learn clinical skills such as:
- patient intake
- physical examinations
- diagnostic tests
- treatment procedures (including administration of medications and first aid)
They also learn administrative skills in:
- medical office procedures
- written communications
- financial management
- insurance billing
- classification of diseases
- medical coding
What Credentials Do Medical Assistant Apprentices Earn?
When an apprentice successfully completes this program, they are well-prepared to take the national exam to become a certified medical assistant.
They also have:
- A nationally recognized credential for medical assisting from the US Department of Labor
- A national certification for medical assisting
- A diploma from FRCC
- And in most cases, continued employment
Pharmacy Technician Apprenticeship
About This Program
Apprentices get hired by one of FRCC's healthcare partners, while completing their pharmacy technician training through the college. Apprentices save money on tuition—and get paid for their on-the-job learning. They complete their related instruction both online and one day per week on campus.
Once in the apprenticeship program, it takes 20 weeks to complete the required coursework at FRCC in addition to working at a health care employer. Apprentices complete a total of 2,000 hours on-the-job training. View Program Overview.
What Is Taught in the Program?
The Pharmacy Technician program teaches students to:
- Apply, communicate and demonstrate personal/interpersonal knowledge and skills.
- Demonstrate, explain, identify and practice foundational professional knowledge and skills.
- Apply, demonstrate and perform the processing and handling of medications and medication orders.
- Apply, assist, explain and identify patient care, quality and safety knowledge and skills.
- Describe and explain regulatory and compliance knowledge and skills.
What Credentials Do Pharmacy Technician Apprentices Earn?
When an apprentice successfully completes FRCC's program, they are well-prepared to take the Certified Pharmacy Technician Certifying Exam (PTCE) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Our students' pass rate on the PTCE is 10 percentage points higher than the national average.
They also have:
- A nationally recognized credential for medical assisting from the US Department of Labor
- A national certification for medical assisting
- A diploma from FRCC
- And in most cases, continued employment
Sterile Processing Apprenticeship
About This Program
Train to be a sterile processing tech in just one semester through this hands-on program. Apprentices pay low (or in some cases no) tuition—and get paid for on-the-job learning through one of FRCC's health care partners.
Once in the apprenticeship program, it takes 20 weeks to complete the required coursework at FRCC in addition to working at a health care employer. Apprentices complete a total of 2,000 hours on-the-job training.
Apprentices work during the week, and take their classes online and on weekends. When they successfully complete this FRCC apprenticeship, they are well-prepared to take the national exam to become a certified sterile processing technician (Certified Registered Central Service Technician exam). What Is Taught in this Program?
Students will receive instruction in:
- sterilization
- infection control
- decontamination
- surgical instrumentation processing
- distribution
- record-keeping

- A diploma from FRCC
