The AAS in surgical technology is a cohort-based program. Each cohort or class is limited to 13 students, which means you'll get direct attention from your professors. You'll learn efficiently in these small class sizes and never be left behind.

You'll also complete a clinical rotation during your final semester. During this time, you will spend time in the operating room developing your skills. Your rotations will give you valuable on-the-job experience.

Degree Details

AAS in Surgical Technology

Program Locations: Westminster, Fort Collins, Vail

Total Credits: 60 credits (4 semesters)

Learn how to provide patient care during all phases of surgery. In our two-year program, you'll learn the duties and skills of a surgical technician:

  • Preparing operating rooms
  • Organizing and counting instruments
  • Passing instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and assistants
  • Assisting with the surgical process
  • Providing patient care before, during and after surgery

Through your work, you'll create optimal results for patients in surgery. Upon program completion, you will be able to take the National Board of Surgical Technology & Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certification exam. When you pass, you will be a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).

Minimum expectations statement: To prepare entry-level Surgical Technologists who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills, and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.

Surgical Technology Completion Track Program

FRCC now offers a completion track for surgical technologists that need to complete the educational requirements to sit for the NBSTSA Certification Exam.

The Surgical Technology (STE) Completion Track is an accelerated program allows you to continue working in your current job as a non-certified surgical technologist while earning you associate degree in Surgical Technology, so you can sit for the NBSTSA Certification Exam.

Program Accreditation

Front Range Community College Surgical Technology Program has been granted accreditation with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Review Council for Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (www.arcstsa.org) which will allow students who successfully complete the program to sit for the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certification and have the credential of Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).

Students enrolling or continuing at Front Range Community College (FRCC) have a right to certain information that the college must provide. As a student applying for or attending the Surgical Technology (STE) Program, you have the right to know it meets the certification criteria for Colorado. The degree may count toward licensing or certification in states other than Colorado. If you are planning to seek work outside of Colorado, it is strongly recommended that you contact that State's certifying or licensing entity for guidance before you begin this program. The Surgical Technology program prepares graduates to practice in the following states and territories: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Washington D.C., American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Marshall Islands, Northern Marianas, Palau, Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands.   

The Surgical Technologist program does not prepare students to practice in these states: Idaho, Indiana, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.
