English as a Second Language (ESL) for the Workplace: Levels 1-4

These courses build participants’ skills for workplace related conversation including speaking, listening and reading comprehension. As participants advance, they expand their vocabulary and grammar knowledge and their understanding of workplace cultural expectations and interactions. Courses can be customized for industry- and company-specific context and vocabulary.

Typical Course Length:  10-12 weeks, 30-40 hours per level

ESL Level 1

Course engages participants in listening and speaking exercises which help them to communicate more competently and confidently in English. It provides them with opportunities to practice pronunciation, vocabulary and basic grammatical patterns.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn workplace-specific vocabulary, processes, rules and regulations.
  • Understand U.S. workplace culture and expectations.
  • Practice giving and asking for directions, descriptions and personal information in your workplace context

ESL Level 2

Course develops participants’ intermediate, workplace-based English communication skills, including workplace vocabulary and conversations, listening comprehension, pronunciation and more complex sentence structure.

  • Build competency in cultural and social interactions.
  • Learn to express needs and describe actions.
  • Understand how to relate past, present and future events.

ESL Level 3

Course develops participants’ advanced-intermediate, workplace-based English communication skills, including formal and informal workplace communications, paragraph writing and workplace culture.

Learning Objectives

  • Build proficiency in formal and informal workplace language and communications.
  • Demonstrate effectively giving and receiving feedback and making recommendations for improvement.
  • Explain typical workplace policies and protocols and respond to common workplace situations.

ESL Level 4

Course develops participants’ advanced workplace-based English communication skills including formal and informal workplace communications, workplace writing, culture and soft skills.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn about effective conflict resolution and teamwork in a multi-cultural setting.
  • Understand cultural expectations for language and behavior in the U.S. workplace.
  • Build fluency in conversations and informal small talk.
  • Practice giving and receiving constructive criticism.

Spanish for the Workplace: Levels 1-3

Spanish Level 1

Course provides participants with foundational Spanish language skills for conversing with native Spanish speaking coworkers. Participants learn basic grammar, industry-specific vocabulary, cultural background information and practice conversations. Company specific forms, policies and issues can be integrated into the course where appropriate.

  • Demonstrate basic conversational skills, acceptable workplace dialogue and informal social exchange.
  • Apply language knowledge and accurate use of context-specific vocabulary.
  • Identify cultural nuances which facilitate understanding and communication.

Spanish Level 2

This course reinforces and builds on Level 1 skills, adding to participants’ grammar and vocabulary knowledge while increasing their confidence and practice in conversation engagement.

Learning Objectives

  • Show workplace specific conversational skills and accurate use of a broader context-specific vocabulary.
  • Demonstrate basic use of appropriate verb tenses.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of cultural nuances that facilitate understanding and communication.

Spanish Level 3

Level 3 reinforces and builds on Level 1 and 2 skills, expanding participants’ vocabulary and grammar comprehension, which they practice in conversational activities and role-plays. These skills increase participants’ comfort and communication skills in both work and social settings. 

Learning Objectives

  • Speak Spanish more confidently in workplace and social conversations.
  • Demonstrate ability to speak the language in three to four different verb tenses.
